Let me be honest with you about marriage.

It is not the fairy tale. It is not the Pinterest board. It is not the love song.

It is the most beautiful, most challenging, most refining assignment God will ever give you. And it will expose every unhealed place inside you that you thought you had hidden.

 

Dr. Tangela and her husband know this firsthand.

Fourteen years. Eight children. Seven grandchildren. A blended family that by God's grace looks so whole that most people would never guess it wasn't always this way.

He is selfless. Supportive. Still becoming. A man who is learning every day what it truly means to love his wife the way Ephesians 5 describes — not as a performance but as a practice. A great father and grandfather who shows up for every child — biological or not — because in this family there are no favorites and no outsiders.

And who is she as a wife?

​She is still learning. Still growing. Still having the daily conversation with God that sounds something like — 'Dad, how do I respond to him? Do I respond? What do I need to apologize for? How do I say this the way You need me to say it?

As an only child she was perfectly comfortable in her own silence, her own lane. You know -doing life on her own terms. And then marriage asked her to do the one thing that didn't come naturally — communicate. Not just talk, but speak the way God intended her to speak to His son.

She spent 14 years as a single mother doing everything alone. And one of the greatest lessons marriage has taught her is that she doesn't have to anymore. That there is someone beside her now. That she can put it down.

She is still learning to let him carry it with her.

And that — the daily surrender of two imperfect people choosing God and each other — is exactly why this ministry exists.

Together they have learned that a marriage will never truly flourish until each individual has surrendered to God and allowed Him to do the healing work that only He can do.

You cannot love your spouse beyond your own brokenness.

H.E.R. & H.I.M. was born out of that truth. Not a counseling program. Not a communication workshop. A ministry of individual healing in the context of covenant.

When she becomes whole and he walks in his God-given mantle — the marriage doesn't just survive.

It becomes what God intended from the beginning.
